Herringbone Kitchen Backsplash in Summit

Cream glazed herringbone tile kitchen backsplash with wood shelves and gray shaker cabinets in Summit, IL

A Summit kitchen got a new backsplash using cream glazed ceramic tile in a 45-degree herringbone pattern. The tile is a 2x6 inch format, which in herringbone requires careful layout planning from the center of the range wall outward so the V-shapes point toward the focal point of the kitchen. The trickiest part of this installation was the under-cabinet lighting strip, which required the top row of tile to be scribed to the cabinet underside with the herringbone pattern maintained through the cut. Outlet and switch boxes were cut with a diamond hole saw for clean round openings. The grout is a warm white unsanded product at 1/8 inch joints, which keeps the pattern visible without overwhelming the tile surface.
