Kitchen Tile: More Precise Than It Looks

Kitchen backsplash installation is detail work. The tile has to line up with the countertop edge, work around outlets and switches, terminate cleanly at cabinet edges, and hold a consistent pattern across an interrupted surface. If you are going with a herringbone or other directional pattern, the center of the layout matters a lot because the pattern has to read correctly behind the range and across to the window.

Kitchen floor tile adds another layer of complexity because most kitchen floors are not perfectly square. We establish a working layout using chalk lines from the room's visual center and work outward so cuts at walls are balanced. For large-format floor tiles, we also check the subfloor for level and address any high spots or deflection before setting anything.

Backsplash Styles We Install

The kitchen tile styles we work with most often in the southwest suburbs include:

  • Subway tile (horizontal, vertical, or stacked stack bond)
  • Herringbone (ceramic, porcelain, or natural stone)
  • Large-format backsplash panels (24x48 porcelain slab behind the range)
  • Moroccan and encaustic patterned tile on island faces or accent walls
  • Zellige and handmade tile (size variation handled with wider joints)
  • Mosaic sheets (glass or stone, full wall or accent strip)

Electrical Outlet Cuts

Cutting tile around outlets is one of the places where a backsplash installation can look rough if it is not done carefully. We use a diamond hole saw or an angle grinder with a cutting wheel to make clean cuts around electrical boxes. The finished result should look like the tile was made to fit, not like the tile was cut around an obstacle.

Kitchen Floor Tile

Kitchen floors take a lot of traffic and get wet regularly from spills and mopping. Porcelain with a matte or textured finish is a practical choice because it is durable and less slippery than polished surfaces when wet. We set kitchen floors with a modified thinset mortar and use spacers to keep joints consistent across the full area.
