Ceramic & Porcelain Tile Installation
Floor and wall tile installed with precision leveling, proper substrate prep, and clean grout work. Serving the Chicago southwest suburbs.
What This Service Covers
Ceramic and porcelain tile installation spans a wide range of applications: living room floors, entry halls, laundry rooms, utility spaces, and wall tile in any room of the house. Porcelain is denser and less porous than standard ceramic, which makes it well-suited for high-traffic floors and areas with moisture exposure. Both materials can be installed on floors and walls, and both require the same careful preparation to hold up over time.
We work with all standard tile sizes from small mosaic sheets up to large-format slabs in the 24x48 inch range. The installation approach varies by size. Larger tiles require back-buttering (applying mortar to both the tile and the substrate) to eliminate voids that could cause cracking under load. Smaller tiles need consistent layout planning so grout lines stay true across the full surface.
The Process We Follow
Substrate Assessment
We check the existing floor or wall for deflection, moisture, and levelness. A floor that flexes or has soft spots will crack tile over time. We fix substrate issues before anything else.
Layout Planning
We snap chalk lines to find the true center of the room and plan the tile layout so cuts at walls are balanced and the pattern reads correctly from the room's main entry point.
Mortar Setting
We use the appropriate mortar for the tile type and substrate. Large-format porcelain typically requires a medium-bed or large-format mortar with a notched trowel to achieve full coverage behind the tile.
Grouting and Sealing
After the mortar cures, we grout with the joint width and color specified. Sanded grout for joints wider than 1/8 inch, unsanded for narrower. Sealer applied after cure to protect porous grout.
Tile Choices: What to Know Before You Buy
Porcelain tile rated for floor use (PEI rating of 3 or higher) is appropriate for most residential traffic. Wall tile is generally softer and not rated for floor loads. If you are choosing tile from a big-box store or tile supplier and are unsure about the rating, bring the product information to the walkthrough and we can advise you.
For natural stone tile (travertine, slate, marble), the installation process is similar but sealing requirements differ. Natural stone is porous and needs to be sealed before grouting to prevent staining from grout haze. We handle that step as part of the job.
